Whatcom County Youth Soccer Association Academic Scholarship
WCYSA has a responsibility to not only encourage children to participate in the sport of soccer, but to strive in the areas of education in preparation for their future.
Requirements:
The scholarship is open to soccer players who have participated in WCYSA.
The scholarship is limited to academics and the individual must be accepted to either a community college, four year university, or a technical school.
Applicants must possess a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average.
Procedures:
Applicants are required to indicate the following in their scholarship application:
Number of years individual has been involved in soccer, what level has the applicant played at (i.e.: recreational, select, ODP teams, high school), positions played, special soccer awards.
Has the applicant refereed?
Has the applicant helped coach a team?
What extra curricular activities or community service has the applicant been involved with outside of soccer?
What is the applicant’s academic plans following graduation from high school?
Minimum one personal recommendation from: 1) a member of the soccer community 2) a member of the academic community 3) a character reference from outside of the academic and soccer community. References from parents or family will not be considered.
A letter from the applicant’s school counselor must accompany the application indicating that the applicant has satisfied requirements of graduation up to the date of the application. A transcript must be provided at time of application and at proof of graduation.
Notification of scholarship availability will be distributed through all the WCYSA teams that are under 18/19 as well as to all WCYSA Clubs prior to the completion of the fall season. Notifications of the scholarship will also be made in the WCYSA Newsletter.
Applications are accepted from March through the beginning of May (check due date on application) of the year the scholarship is awarded.
A scholarship selection committee composed from the WCYSA Board of Directors will determine the applicants to be voted on at the May WCYSA Board Meeting.
A $750 Scholarship will be awarded to one boy and one girl.
Once the recipients have been determined a check will be written to the school for the recipient’s use.
